So, Steve, that really hit home for him.” With Howard out of the picture, Bryant is working his way back to the place that’s felt like home for the past 17 seasons — on the court, playing in a Lakers uniform. “It’s progressing faster than everybody expected,” Bryant said of his recovery from the Achilles tendon surgery he underwent in April. “I should be able to be more active with conditioning in the middle of August, which is like four months after the surgery. Kobe Bryant says he has ‘shattered’ expected recovery time

Because of that the recovery has been different, the timetable has been different, the normal timetable for recovering from an Achilles, weve shattered that. Lakers star Kobe Bryant says he is shattering the recovery timetable for his torn Achilles tendon. (AP Photo) The normal rehab period for a player coming off Achilles tendon surgery is 9-to-12 months, and even then, there are frequently obstacles in making a complete comeback. Chauncey Billups, for example, had Achilles surgery in February of last year and attempted to come back in late November. He suffered other leg injuries, though, and played only 22 games. When Bryant originally suffered the injury, he predicted a return in six monthsin time for training camp. In June, he tempered those expectations, saying a more realistic goal would be November or December. But Lakers Vice President Jim Buss reignited the hope that Bryant would be back ahead of schedule, telling NBA TV, I would bet a lot of money that this guy comes back probably in preseason. All in all, it is still too early to pin down a date for Bryants return. On Friday, Lakers assistant coach Kurt Rambis told Sporting News that Bryant will need to be examined in the next few weeks before anyone can begin to focus on a return date.

While L.A. has lost arguably the NBA’s best center, their competitors have gotten better. The Clippers re-signed Chris Paul and added veterans Jared Dudley and J.J. Redick to the mix. The Memphis Grizzlies signed sharpshooting forward Mike Miller.

Sports for the gif). Just a few hand slaps, a side fist-bump, a regular fist-bump and then the snake motions. We’ve got some slithering here, and then a crude attempt at forming what is presumably a snake with the hands. To this I say, “C’mon, Kobe, step your game up. I learned how to make a better snake shadow puppet when I was in the fourth grade.” Actually, I’m pretty sure most people in my generation managed to learn that. All kidding aside, though, it’s always great to see just how excited crowds get when Kobe is in the building. You could tell just how happy that young man was, especially after he gave the Mamba a big hug before disappearing out of the video. Here’s hoping Kobe continues doing the handshake in warm-up lines. I can’t wait to see Robert Sacre do it. Nike Greater China is hosting Kobe Bryant for a week as he spreads messages of motivation to the youth. I still inadvertently give off the MJ-styled inner-cheek chew and squinted-eye look while attempting to concentrate on what someone is saying. Im not trying to be Michael Jordan, its just something I picked up after watching hours and hours of SportsChannel as a kid. The on court aspects, though, dont have to be just because Kobe Bryant watched a ton of Michael Jordan while growing up. Again, Kobe is supposed to be doing this. Both players are around the NBAs average height and weight 6-6 and 220 pounds and both have similar skill sets. And when you pair those two factors with the athleticism and smarts that both boast, you get a similar game. And for that size, with those skills, jab-step jumpers and turnaround daggers off of a post-up are the most efficient way to go. For Bryant, our only longtime complaint is that he relies too heavily on that jab-step from 19 or 20 feet out, when Jordan would usually attempt to get to 15 feet. The shooting guard position is the NBAs least influential, and it speaks to Jordan and Bryants smarts and competitiveness that theyve managed to dominate eras while playing a position that really doesnt matter all that much in comparison to the other four spots. And this sort of play again, those jab-steps, and those turnarounds and fadeaways is how you get things down at the shooting guard position.
